A car accident is a scary and life-altering experience and even a minor fender bender can leave you rattled. But a severe car accident with fatalities has devastating consequences. It not only affects those involved but leaves loved ones grieving and having to pick up the pieces.
When the accident is the result of a negligent driver, it can be more than frustrating and discouraging.
Crash caused by wrong-way driver
Sadly, a major collision outside of Lexington in early January that took the lives of six people was caused by a negligent wrong-way driver. A family of five from Michigan was killed in the fiery crash, as was the wrong-way driver. The collision happened in the early morning hours of January 6, around 2:30 AM in the northbound lane as the family was traveling home from a vacation in Florida. The SUV the family was riding in burst into flames at the time of impact.
Driver had BAC of .306%
The Fayette County coroner’s office has recently confirmed that the wrong-way driver had a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .306 percent, which is nearly four times the legal limit. It is illegal to drive in Kentucky with a BAC over .08 percent.
Risky driving threatens us all
Risky driving behavior in all forms poses a dangerous safety threat to every road user. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), impaired driving, distracted driving, drowsy driving and speeding contribute to approximately 25,000 deaths across the United States each year. These deaths are entirely preventable and while most people know these behaviors are illegal, they do them anyway. Take steps to protect your safety when out on the roads by driving defensively and watching out for the actions of other drivers.
Seek professional help
If you’ve been involved in a car accident as the result of another’s negligence, you may feel the pressure of mounting medical bills or from lost wages. Seek the advice of a professional personal injury attorney sooner rather than later to ensure the best possible result in your case.
