Another driver’s addiction can cause you injury

In a perfect world, every person would be able to accomplish a goal of self-mastery. This would mean that no one would ever suffer from addiction because every person would have perfect control over his or her desires and need for gratification. Unfortunately, certain addictions are becoming more and more prevalent due to changes in technology.

A growing problem today is cell phone addiction. While this can lead to a myriad of different issues and dangers for those suffering from it and anyone with whom they may come into contact, the most serious of them often occur behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. If you’re sharing a Kentucky roadway with a driver who is a cell phone addict, you could be at great risk for serious, if not fatal, injuries.

Be aware of the alert signs

Perhaps you have an inexperienced driver in your household or you are constantly dealing with a spouse who can’t keep his or her hands off a phone for more than a half hour at a time. If your loved one is a cell phone addict, he or she could be at higher risk for automobile collisions when driving. The following list shows signs and symptoms of cell phone addiction:

  • A person who becomes irritable, restless, angry or depressed when he or she loses access to a cell phone may be an addict.
  • Cell phone addicts gain a certain sense of pleasure or satisfaction from using their devices. However, they often need to increase their usage as time goes on in order to achieve the desired effect.
  • People addicted to their cell phones often encounter challenges in the workplace, personal relationships and elsewhere due to their addictions.
  • Phone addicts often have a tremendous yearning for the latest, greatest gadget on the market.
  • People addicted to cell phones often can’t control the urge to use them at inappropriate times, such as while operating motor vehicles.

You likely noticed that many of the symptoms on the list are quite similar to signs of drug addiction. This is because phone addiction can have similar effects on a person’s cognitive and physical state.

If you were the victim of someone’s cell phone addiction

Using a cell phone while driving is one of the most common types of distraction, and distracted driving accidents result in many fatalities and serious injuries in Kentucky every year. If you suffered a serious injury in a car accident and later learned that the incident was probably preventable were it not for the other driver’s use of a cell phone, you might understandably feel angry and frustrated. After all, why should you have to pay medical bills and other expenses associated with a collision you didn’t cause?

Many distracted driving accident victims seek financial recovery for their losses by filing personal injury claims against those deemed responsible for their injuries. An experienced attorney can answer all of your questions and concerns and fight for the maximum amount of compensation to which you are entitled, allowing you to better focus on your recovery during this trying time.
