Deadly truck accident on I-64 caused by distracted driver

A deadly accident on Interstate 64 near exit 58 in Kentucky claimed the life of a 61-year-old Bedford man and left another person seriously injured. Now, police say that the accident was, at least partially, the result of distracted driving.

According to the Kentucky State Police, the truck driver was heading west on the interstate when he failed to notice that there was a significant slowdown in his lane. Consequently, he drove a fully-loaded tractor-trailer into a Jeep Liberty, killing the driver. The ricochet from the initial accident drove the Jeep and the truck into another vehicle, causing the other victim's injuries.

After investigating, the police determined that the truck driver not only had an electronic device mounted to his dash playing a video at the time of the accident, he was also not wearing his prescription glasses. His commercial driver's license and medical card both state that he is required to use his glasses when driving.

Driving without your glasses is clearly foolish but probably not something that the driver hadn't done before. Distracted driving is a problem for many people -- but it is pretty brazen to play videos while you're driving because you can't seem to keep your mind on the road.

While the truck driver is now charged with manslaughter and sitting in jail, that's the state's concern. The surviving victim and the family of the deceased victim still have to pick up the pieces of their lives and figure out a way to move forward. After a truck accident, it is often necessary to turn to a lawsuit in order to get fair compensation. While money can't really make the situation better, it can provide necessary financial stability for victims and survivors of a truck accident.
