Implementing technology in the right way can reduce distraction

You know that distracted driving is a serious safety concern in Kentucky and across the country. Every day, people are suffering serious or fatal injuries in accidents caused by a person who was not paying attention. From cell phones to in-car infotainment systems, there are many things that can take a driver's attention away from the task at hand.

When you think about distracted driving, you may think about texting behind the wheel or looking at Facebook while operating a vehicle. While phones are the leading cause of distracted driving incidents, they are not the only area of concern. The systems and technology that come standard in many newer vehicles can also be distracting. In response to this issue, many automakers are looking at ways to implement technology in better, safer ways.

Practical use of technology in vehicles

Through technology and new advances, there are now more features in cars that will allow drivers to have an optimal experience while avoiding distraction. Some ways that automakers are practically implementing technology in some vehicles include the following:

  • Steering wheels with controls allow a driver to do things like change the radio station, adjust the volume and do other things without looking away or even removing his or her hand from the wheel.
  • Some cars now come with heads-up displays that allow a driver to see messages and alerts without looking down because they display in the windshield.
  • Voice-controlled media controls allow drivers to speak to the car to do certain things, like change the radio, enter a destination in on the GPS and much more. This allows a driver to stay focused on the road.

These and other examples are changing the way people drive. Hopefully, they can help reduce accidents caused by distracted driving and help drivers stay alert and vigilant while behind the wheel.

More technology does not lessen responsibility

Regardless of what features may be in a car, the person behind the wheel is still responsible for making choices that are smart and do not endanger others. If you are the victim of an accident caused by a distracted driver, you may have legal options available to you. Personal injury laws allow you to pursue damages from the liable party through a civil claim. If you think this is a reasonable course of action for you, it may be prudent to start with a complete assessment of your case.
