3 steps to avoid a car accident

When you look at the statistics or you read about recent car accidents on the news, the reason they feel so frightening is because many of those involved had nothing to do with why the accident happened. A driver simply made a mistake and caused a crash, regardless of the other driver's own skills or experience behind the wheel.

It's frightening because it feels like it could happen to anyone.

While it is true that accidents happen to many innocent drivers (and could happen to you as well), that's not to say you can't increase your odds of avoiding a crash. Here are three steps that can help:

  • Always maintain sufficient following distance from the car ahead of yours. Ideally, you want at least three seconds between vehicles.
  • Understand your escape plan options. Always know where you can safely steer your car if an accident is imminent so that you do not have to think about it in the moment.
  • Stay focused on the road around you. Never let your attention wander. The key to avoiding accidents is responding immediately when risks present themselves.

If you do all of these things, you may avoid the crash. You'll have enough space to do so, you'll know exactly where to steer the vehicle and you'll start reacting to the potential crash as soon as possible. That all helps.

Unfortunately, even that does not guarantee you won't get injured in a crash with a negligent driver. It really can happen to you, and it's very important to understand all of your legal rights after the crash.
