Springtime is dangerous for motorcyclists

With spring less than a week away, it's time once again to focus on motorcycle safety. Motorists have to learn to safely share the road with two-wheeled cyclists, as the milder temperatures and longer days are a siren song to Kentucky bikers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that over 4,956 motorcyclists died in highway accidents in one recent year. Many of those wrecks were collisions between motorcyclists and drivers of passenger vehicles. Below are some tips to keep motorcyclists safer on the road.

Use caution when passing and changing lanes

It's fine to pass a motorcyclist where passing is allowed. But be sure that you signal your intention well in advance of your movement, so the biker isn't caught unaware. Then, allow several car lengths between you and the motorcycle before merging back into your lane.

Check your blind spots

Since drivers can even miss approaching cars in their blind spots, it is very easy to overlook a motorcyclist coming from behind. The quieter, foreign-made motorcycles can be even harder to identify as they get closer to your vehicle.

Remain weather aware

Motorcyclists are more drastically affected by inclement weather than drivers. A sudden slick spot could put the biker into a deadly skid, so give them plenty of room when it begins to rain.

Be mindful of intersections

Motorcyclists face increased peril at intersections, so make sure that you are super aware when approaching an intersection. Come to a full stop, and look both ways before entering the intersection.

Injured riders have the right to seek civil damages

If you are a Kentucky motorcyclist who got injured in a collision with a vehicle, know your rights to seek compensation for your injuries and damages.
